YOU'RE A WHAT? Part 1

Nowadays, we are want in America to label people according to their political philosophy; mostly just with regard to Liberal or Conservative leaning.  There's a lot more to this than a name.  Our modern governments in the Western World are only a few hundred years old.  Things change, you know.  Much of the study of these governments began in the 1800s.

It may surprise many that Classical Liberalism is very similar to, what we call today, Conservatism.  Obviously, that makes a Classical Liberal a lot different than a Modern Liberal.  The point here is: names change as much as ideals.

In todays terms, speaking in a very general sense, conservatives like things the way they are and liberals are apt to change things.  Conservatives need to see a very good reason to change things.  Liberals think things need to be changed in order to progress.  So, in a very general sense, we would be in a mess if everyone was conservative or if everyone was liberal.  Actually, we need at least some of each or the other would go off the rails.

In business, I think we would find similar results.  Having all conservative thinkers would stagnate progress.  Conservative thinkers would likely not try radical new innovations or, at least, would go at them in a slower manner.  Liberal thinkers would be likely the ones to try new ways to make money or do things in a new way.  New businesses get started through innovation.  But remember, many new businesses fail.  Start-ups are often run by liberals.  Established businesses are likely run by conservatives.

The thoughts above are generalizations, of course.  No way of thinking is always good nor always bad.

To change or not to change is only one aspect of the conservative - liberal comparisons.  We'll delve into it more deeply at a future time.
