THE WORD THIS WEEKEND

The word at Catholic mass this weekend is FOOD.  We can't live without it, can we?  Food and drink are the essence of what is necessary to sustain life.

The first reading is from the Second Book of Kings in the Old Testament.  Elisha was a prophet and miracle worker long before Jesus was born.  Somehow, Elisha made twenty barley loaves feed one hundred people with bread left over.   Sound familiar?

The second reading is from Paul's letter written while he was in prison.  He had the courage to tell the Ephesians that faith was all they really needed.  Though he no doubt lacked good food, he encouraged his followers to live the life of Christ.

The Gospel reading is John's version of the 'loaves and the fishes' story.   Jesus repeated what God had allowed Elisha to do many years before.  This time we must be reminded that Jesus is the food and drink we need.  He left himself for us in the Eucharist - available to the fortunate every day of the year.

You know it is said,  "You can lead a horse to water but can't make him drink."  Why would anyone pass up the chance to partake in the Lord?
