THE WORD THIS WEEKEND

The word this weekend at Catholic mass is 'marriage'.  In the first reading, taken from Genesis, it is recorded that God said, after creating the first man, "It is not good for the man to be alone, I will make a suitable partner for him."  And later Adam said, "This one, at last, is bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; this one shall be called 'woman,' for out of her man this one has been taken."   Man and woman were made to be partners.

In the Gospel reading according to Mark, Jesus echoes Genesis and goes further to declare the permanence of marriage.  Jesus said, "... For this reason, a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife; the two shall become one flesh."  And, "... What God has joined together, let no man separate."

I want to record a single line from the second reading this week because I think it encapsulates the whole of religion.  Paul, speaking about Jesus, wrote this to his Hebrew friends:  "He, for a little while, was made lower than the angels; that by the grace of God he might taste death for everyone."  He did suffer and die for us - "for everyone."  .

Have a great weekend.  I love you.
