The word this weekend at Catholic mass is "Law"! What are the rules? Which is most important?
In the first reading from the Old Testament Book of Deuteronomy, Moses told his multitude of followers to obey the rules; follow the commandments that God had given them. Moses promised them a good life if they kept the word of God.
The echo of that story comes from the Gospel of Mark. Jesus was asked what the most important commandments were. He famously answered that the most important rule was to Love God with all you heart, mind, soul and strength. The next most important was to Love your neighbor as yourself. All other rules are governed by these. He promised him a good afterlife if he kept the word of God.
The reading from the New Testament, Paul's letter to the Hebrews tells us something else about the law. He reminded his followers that priests were chosen from among men and they were not perfect and were likely to disobey the law. That shouldn't surprise anyone; men sin. He told them to focus on the one real teacher of the law, the Son of God, Jesus Christ. He is perfect.
Do your best. Don't be overcome by minutia. Follow no man - only Jesus.
Have a great weekend. I love you.
