This is more of what I was thinking about last Saturday under this subject. Again it has to do with how things come around - maybe never really change.
During the American Revolutionary War, we fought for freedom from British rule; the thirteen colonies wanted freedom to govern themselves. What followed was the Declaration of Independence and then the U.S. Constitution each enumerating our need and a blueprint for self-rule.
That went okay for a time, but about 80 years later, the Northern and Southern States were at such odds over the right to govern themselves; they went to war with each other. The right to self government of states went awry when it came to slavery. The South was dependent on it's agriculture production and, to be profitable, that depended on minimal cost of labor. Still, it all boiled down to individual states having the right to make their own rules and standards. The Federal Government wouldn't allow that and we killed each other for a couple of years to settle the dispute.
Well, well, well! Here we are again. The battle between the federal and state governments goes on. The Federal Government strives to interpret the laws, the constitution to suit itself and those in current power. It tries to extend the limits, the boundaries of it's authority. The States resist as best they can.
Some states want to resist the Federal directions on the rules of the pandemic. Some states want different rules concerning abortion rights. Some states want different rules concerning immigrants. States demand different rules governing voting. Some states have laws encouraging union workers; others do not.
I could go with more things about which some states and the feds disagree. I just want to say, "Don't be dismayed." It all seems more pronounced right now. In the long run it will smooth itself out. It helps that we are now such a mobile society.
You see, I don't expect another civil war. I do expect the Feds will eventually wear the states down and turn this into a socialist, totalitarian society where the people will have no say at all about how they live.
