Alcohol and drugs blur the mind's vision of the long term consequences of one's actions while sharpening one's vision of short term benefits. From the mental standpoint, this is actually what it means to be "under the influence" and why it is so dangerous.
On the physical side of being "under the influence", one gradually loses control of one's own body and it's functions but does not recognize it and is fooled into seeing it as a good thing.
