For me, the word at Catholic mass this weekend is 'giving'. There is a 'how to', a 'why', and a 'what rewards can follow'.
The first reading is from the Book of Kings. It relates a story about Elijah the prophet who asked a women to bring him water and food while he was traveling. She didn't know him and told him she only had enough food for one meal for her and her son and, because of the famine in the land, they would probably die. He told her, "No matter, do as I ask and God will take care of you." She did and God did take care of her. Her giving, though she had so little, was rewarded by God. She and her son had food for a year.
The second reading is from Paul's letter to the Hebrews (he was one of them). He reminded them what Christ had given them - the greatest gift of all - His life. He promised Jesus would come again and reward those who follow Him.
The Gospel reading is from Mark. It is a story I have heard often and it always resonates and causes me to examine what I do. In the story, Jesus was watching the Jews place money into the coffers of the temple. Each gave different amounts. The rich and very rich gave large sums. Then, a very poor lady passed by and dropped in a few cents. After this, Jesus explained to his disciples that the poor lady had done much more than the rich people because she had given from poverty. She would be rewarded more than those who gave from their wealth.
Have a great weekend. See you in church. I love you.
