This weekend at Catholic mass I choose the word Bible. In the first reading from the prophet Nehemiah, Ezra the scribe went to Temple on the sabbath and read from the scroll what had been handed down from Moses. It was their list of laws. It was part of what we call the Bible. He instructed the listeners not to be saddened by what they heard but to rejoice; to be gladdened. Laws are not meant to limit but to show the way.
In the Gospel reading from Luke, he relates how Jesus went to Temple on the Sabbath and also read from their scrolls. He chose to read from the writings of the prophet Isaiah. It was a prophecy of the one to come who would lead them. It was part of what we call the Bible. He told them that this prophecy had been fulfilled -- fulfilled by his coming. Jesus is the fulfillment of the word.
The Bible is a marvelous work - in total. I spent the year 2021 listening to the Bible read from cover to cover on a podcast. The "Bible in a Year" podcast. It was a great experience. 365 podcasts of 15 to 20 minutes. I'd recommend it for anyone.
Have a great weekend. I love you.
