ARE YOU READY FOR SOME FOOTBALL

When I started with the football stuff, I never thought I'd be still doing it this long into the new year.  It's so exciting.  It's making January go fast (thank Goodness).  Too bad for basketball.

The Bengals play the Tennessee Titans on Saturday evening (4:35 again) for the right to play for the conference championship.  Kansas City Chiefs and Buffalo Bills square off in the other semi.

Not that they're easy, by any means, but of the three teams left, I would choose to play the Titans if I had a choice.  Tennessee was the #1 seed while the Bengals were #4 - that's how we got to this point.

You may think that the Titans amassed the best record of the bunch (12-5) because they played in the weakest division which includes the Jaguars and the Texans.  Don't let that fool you.  At one point this year, they defeated the Bills, the Chiefs, the Colts and the Rams in consecutive weeks.  Very impressive.  Later, they beat the 49ers.  Also impressive.

Tennessee is less a passing team than the other three still alive.  They have the best running back in the league, Derrick Henry.  He has been injured but is expected to be back for this game - remember that the Titans didn't have to play a game last weekend.  Sadly, the Bengals have been decimated by injury to their defensive line.  The linebackers and safeties will have to have a big day stopping the run.

Their quarterback is Ryan Tannehill.  His stats are only mediocre for the league as a whole.  He is known to be hot and cold.  He'll be throwing to Julio Jones and A.J. Brown for the most part.  If the Bengals have to use extra backs to help stop the running game, they can hurt us.

Here are the relative season statistics for each team compared to the rest of the league (32 teams).

Team offense  Bengals #7  Titans #15
Team passing offense  Bengals #7  Titans #24
Team rushing offense  Bengals #23  Titans #5
Team scoring offense  Bengals #17  Titans #6
Team defense  Bengals #17  Titans #6
Team passing defense  Bengals #26  Titans #25
Team rushing defense  Bengals #5  Titans #2

Statistics sometimes lie.  I feel the most important thing for the Bengals is to have a good opening quarter and get the lead.   They need to turn the Titans into a passing team based on the score.

May the stripes be with you.  Who Dey  🏈🏈
