THE WORD THIS WEEKEND

This weekend at Catholic mass you will hear the famous story of the Prodigal Son as written by the evangelist, Luke.  It's a famous story because it is so memorable and because we hear it at least once every year.  Many of our gospel readings are heard only once every three years.

This year let's think about the son who was not prodigal; prodigal means wasteful and reckless.  Think about the son who stayed home and worked with his father on his father's land.  If you recall, he gets his nose out of joint (my mom used that reference often) when his brother returns and his father throws a big feast for him.  That's about all that's written about that brother.  Let's think what might have been left unsaid - that, maybe, made him so angry.

Here it is good to recall that we can sin or offend God by what we fail to do as well as what we do.  Maybe the good son failed to encourage his brother to stay at home; to lead a good life; to be satisfied with what he had.  Maybe the good son was glad his brother went off so that he might receive more of an inheritance.  Maybe the good son knows he should have gone off after his brother to see that he was okay.  Maybe the good son did only what was asked of him - nothing extra for his father.  For sure the good son was full of jealousy.

Today, let's think about what we could or should have done but that we didn't do.  We all know, we could have done more.

Have a blessed weekend!  I love you.
