RETRO DAY

It's Monday and here's another entry from the past.  If you're tired of the heat, read my entry from five years ago about what happened less than 100 years ago.

JULY 24

The Dust Bowl is chronicled in the classic Steinbeck novel "The Grapes of Wrath".  It is both a location and an extended event.  The center of the problem was in the states of Kansas, Oklahoma, Colorado, Texas and New Mexico.   Poor soil conservation and use by farmers contributed to the problems.  The whole country was hit with extreme temperatures.

The drought associated with the dust bowl occurred in varying degrees from 1934 through 1940.  The peak of dust storms occurred in April, 1935.  These storms were so bad that dust from them choked the cities of Chicago, Cleveland, Cincinnati, New York, Boston and Washington D.C.

About this date in 1936 is considered the peak of the "dust bowl" heat wave.   This date, temperatures reached above 100 °F in many American cities.  In many areas, the minimum temperatures for this period are above 90 °F.  More than 5,000 deaths were attributed to the heat.

Here are some examples of the 1936 heat wave:  record highs of 120 °F in Arkansas, 121 °F in Kansas, 114 °F in Louisiana, 112 °F in Michigan, 118 °F in Nebraska, 121 °F in North Dakota,
111° F in Pennsylvania, 114 °F in Wisconsin, and 112 °F in West Virginia.

This was not global warming???

Oh, by the way, the Winter of 1935-1936 was one of the coldest ever recorded.
