RANDOM MUSINGS FROM THE TOP OF THE HILL

THE SEVEN

In Christian teaching, there are seven capital virtues and seven deadly sins which oppose them.  The virtues are prudence, justice, temperance, fortitude, faith, hope and charity.  The sins are pride, greed, envy, lust, gluttony, wrath, and sloth.  The sins are deadly because they restrict virtues that one should have and because they lead to more serious sins.

Today, I am focused on just one sin:  pride.  It can be excessive self-esteem; reasonable self-respect; delight in some attribute, accomplishment.   I note that June has been called Pride Month.

On May 31, 2022, President Joe Biden proclaimed June as LGBTQI+ Pride Month.  Here is an excerpt from that proclamation.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, JOSEPH R. BIDEN JR., President of the United States of America, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Constitution and the laws of the United States, do hereby proclaim June 2022 as Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, and Intersex Pride Month.  I call upon the people of the United States to recognize the achievements of the LGBTQI+ community, to celebrate the great diversity of the American people, and to wave their flags of pride high.

Now, is this excessive self-esteem or reasonable self-respect or delight in some attribute, accomplishment?

Let us all be reasonable and learn to live together without excessive pride.
