RETRO DAY

Here are a pair of entries I made four years ago as part of the Cincinnati series.  Please excuse me for trying to be funny.  Hope you find them interesting.

CINCINNATI

There are only two sins in Cincinnati.  Listen closely and you can hear them in the name.

One might be managing/owning a Cincinnati professional sports franchise and the other is disparaging our Cincinnati-style chili.  All other sins will be forgiven.

Ponder this!

Our special style of chili was brought to us by a Greek immigrant named Lambrinides who founded Skyline Chili. Well, we have a new Greek place in our neighborhood called Greek Isles Restaurant and they don't even serve chili at all.

Skyline's main competition for Cincinnati-style chili is from a family of Jordanese immigrants names Dauod who operate Gold Star Chili.  We have a new Jordanian restaurant in our neighborhood named Taziki's Mediterranean Cafe.  They don't serve chili either - but they do have a Greek salad.  What's the deal?

So here's my question:  which came first?  chili in Cincinnati or Cincinnati chili?

CINCINNATI

In 1965, four brothers of the Daoud family purchased a Mt. Washington eatery called Hamburger Heaven.  They soon found that the best and most ordered item on the menu was the chili.  They changed the restaurant's name to Gold Star Chili and concentrated on selling that Cincinnati style concoction of chili, with your choice of spaghetti, cheese, beans, and/or onions.  Today, there are over 85 Gold Star locations in Ohio, Kentucky and Indiana - still owned or franchised by the family.

An interesting note about this, a Daoud family relative has opened similar restaurants, he calls Chili House, in Egypt, Jordan, Bahrain, Iraq, Saudi Arabia and Syria.  Check 'em out if you're ever lost in the Middle East.
