QUOTES

Today, I choose the 32nd President of the United States; Franklin Delano Roosevelt.  FDR brought us out of the Great Depression and then into and through the Second World War.  He fought and lived with crippling polio or similar disease his whole adult life.  His programs brought post-war prosperity and led the Democratic Party into 'New Deal' liberalism.  Here a some notable quotes:

"My friends, judge me by the enemies I have made."

"Philosophy?  I am a Christian and a Democrat.  That's all."

"Repetition does not make a lie into a truth."

". . . the only thing we have to fear is fear itself."

"We find our population suffering from old inequalities, little changed by vast sporadic remedies."

"To dole out relief in this way is to administer a narcotic, a subtle destroyer of the human spirit.  It is inimical to the dictates of sound policy.  It is in violation of the traditions of America.  Work must be found for able-bodied but destitute workers.  The Federal Government must and shall quit this business of relief."

". . . if a government is to be prudent, it's taxes must produce ample revenues without discouraging enterprise; and if it is to be just, it must distribute the burdens of taxes equitably."

"We defend and we build a way of life, not for America alone, but for all mankind."

"We must be the great arsenal of democracy."

"The hopes of the Republic cannot forever tolerate either underserved poverty or self-serving wealth."

"Yesterday, December 7, 1941 - a day that will live in infamy - . . . "

More from him at a later date!
