RETRO DAY

Here we are at 10 - 10 - 2022.  Six years ago and more, I did an ongoing series every Monday that explained something special that happened on that day in history.  Here is the entry from 2016.  Concerning the last line below - I understand that they now have a new display in the museum.  Rats!

OCTOBER 10

On this date in 1845, the United States Naval Academy was established in Annapolis, Maryland.
This academy educates officers for both the U.S. Navy and the U.S. Marine Corps.  It sits at the point where the Severn River meets the Chesapeake Bay.  The beautiful town of Annapolis is now the state capitol.

Each new class consists of about 1,200 men and women known as plebes.  The average graduating class is 1,000.  The students are called midshipmen.  Their motto is Ex Scientia, Tridens which translates to:  From Knowledge, Sea Power.  Their fight song is "Anchors Aweigh" and their mascot is Bill the goat.

President Jimmy Carter, 50 astronauts, dozens of scholars, and 73 Medal of Honor recipients are included in the school's Alumni along with my son-in-law whose image, I trust, still stands in the museum on campus.

ps.  My son-in-law was at the Academy this past weekend for the retirement of one of his classmates, a good friend - he retired as a Marine General.
