You may have noticed that I've been away. Not away, out of town, but away from the computer and this blog. So sorry!
Here's a tidbit to get you back in the swing. It's a big old "Who Knew?"
Did you know that we have a National Ice Center in the Washington D.C. area. (No, you can't skate on it.) Of course, it is part of the federal government. It tries to include the combined knowledge of the U.S. Coast Guard, the U.S. Navy and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration with regard to the Earth's Polar regions; Antarctica and the Arctic.
The composite group is known colloquially as the Ice Command. It gives statistical information on the location and thickness of ice anywhere in the world to our armed forces and allied armed forces for tactical purposes and safety in travel. If you captained a ship like the Titanic, these dudes could tell you where every iceberg floats. Yes, who knew?
