THINGS I RECENTLY LEARNED

Venice, Italy appears to be one of the most beautiful cities in the world.  It is not a city on the coast of Italy as I pictured.  It is a city on an island in a lagoon.  It is located near the Bay of Venice in the Adriatic Sea.

The city has a flooding problem.  It seldom floods more than about two feet.  In some parts of the city, it floods a little every day or twice a day with the tides.  For the big floods, they have flood sirens just like we have tornado sirens.  A couple times a year it floods really bad.  The city has elevated walkways that city workers erect when the flood comes.  The elevated walkways are about two feet high.

They have figured out how to stop the big floods from swallowing up the city by installing flood walls between the city and the narrow entrances to the bay.  They can't keep them up all time or the lagoon would turn into a putrid mess.  You see, the waters that run through the city are used as it's sanitary sewer system.

I'd love to visit but I might settle for Venice, Florida.
