Two plus two is equal to four. On that, I hope, we can all agree. I've always loved math because it fits my, simple, logical mind. There are no questions left unanswered with math. There is only one correct answer. Mathematics is clean like that. It appeals to many people but make no mistake, there are those who cannot cope with this type of thinking. Many, many can't stand math.
Equality is a mysterious concept. It's straight forward in the example above but what about things not as simple as numbers? Are all men created equal? If you prefer, are all people created equal?
People are not numbers. Of course, the number two is not shaped like the number four and two number twos look nothing like a four. The equality here comes from value.
If all people are created equal, then the value of each of us should be the same. Are they the same in our world?
Some people are stronger than others. This can have to do with their age, sex, physical stature, or mental acuity. I feel most people have a natural desire to protect the most vulnerable; the young, the elderly, the weak and the intellectually disabled.
Back to equality: we are not numbers. No two people are exactly equal by the standards we humans use. Don't pretend that we are. Society doesn't treat us all equally. Attempts to make us more equal to each other are futile and often counterproductive.
Accept that men and women are not equal by any human standard. In the eyes of God, sure they are. In Heaven they will be equal. In our world, they are not. Neither is better - neither is worse; they are just different. Vive la Difference!
