On this date in 1889, John L Sullivan successfully defended his bare-knuckled world heavyweight prizefighting championship when the trainer of  his opponent, Jake Kilrain, threw in the towel after 75 one-minute rounds.  

In 1932 on this date, the Dow Jones Industrial Average hit an all-time low of 41.22 - the bottom of the Great Depression.  That is the sum or index of average value of a share of stock in the top 30 industrial firms in the US.  Today, that number is over 39,000.
  
On this date in 1947, a news report came out of Roswell, NM that a UFO had landed there.  That story won't go away.

On this date in 1973, the NY Mets were 12-1/2 games out of first place in the National League.  They went on to win the pennant and, 12 years after the "Miracle Mets", this miracle occurred.  They were 12 games below .500 with only 44 to play.  What a finish!
 
John D Rockefeller was born on this date in 1839 and Nelson Rockefeller was born in 1908.  Oh, to be as rich as Rockefeller on the sunny side of the street.

Roone Arledge was born on this date in 1931.  He became president of ABC Sports and later ABC News, . He shaped modern sports broadcasting  - especially of the NFL and Olympics.  

In 1952, Jack Lambert who became a Pittsburg Steeler; in 1958, Kevin Bacon who became "footloose", and in 1961, Toby Keith who became "country" were born, and in 1991, Ryan Fuhrman was born in California, taken to Ohio on his way to Virginia, raised in Florida before his return to Ohio.  PTL
