This week, no guessing game. These words are carved into the State Dining Room mantel in the White House. It was done in 1945 and the passage is known as John Adams' blessing. These sentences were taken from a letter written by the President to his wife, Abigail Adams, in 1800.
I Pray Heaven To Bestow The Best Of Blessings On This House And All that shall hereafter Inhabit it. May none but Honest and Wise Men ever rule under This Roof.
John Adams was our first Vice-President and our second President. He served as President for one term from 1797 to 1801. He was 64 when he was elected President and died at the age of 90. This Adams is known as one of our Founding Fathers, a leader of the American Revolution and close friend of Thomas Jefferson who followed him into the White House. His son, John Quincey Adams, was our sixth President. Mount Adams in Cincinnati was named after John Quincey.
