My entry last Monday was not so much a quiz as an opinion poll. I asked who is the most important Bengal player and overall organization member. The consensus on the player was of course Joe Burrow. He's the best we got and one of the best in all of football. Last week's game made me think the most important player was someone else.
You saw it. Burrow's offense put 38 points on the board - enough to win 99% of NFL games. BUT, he didn't make a tackle all day. They lost because the defense allowed one of the worst offenses in the league to score 44 points. And how did the Steelers do that - mostly with dinky passes over the middle of the Bengal defense. One after the other, every series of downs, it was like Groundhog Day - the same over and over. And why do I think this happened? Mike was in street clothes.
Mike is football parlance for middle linebacker. The guy who lines up behind the defensive line and in front of the defensive backs - usually in the middle of the field. Logan Wilson's knee wouldn't let him play. He is not the best in football, but he's the best we've got. Wilson is the one who normally calls the defensive plays. He has the mic in his helmet from the defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo. Germaine Pratt is a hard hitter and active linebacker but tends to get lost. Akeem Davis-Gaither took Wilson's place - he was lost - in over his head.
Most important player to me seems like Logan Wilson.
Most important staff member is now Duke Tobin, director of player personnel. He has final say on talent acquisition; from draft choices to free agents within the Brown family's spending limits. From the looks of that whole defense and the offensive line, they need lots of talent - they need players who make a difference.
That's my opinion, for what it's worth.
