RANDOM MUSINGS FROM THE TOP OF THE HILL

3/08/2025

NEWS OF THE WEEK

Microsoft announced it was retiring SKYPE.  After May of this year it is gonzo.

I hear that "Anora" was the big winner at the Oscars - Academy Award for best picture of the year plus some others.  Never heard of it.

Andrew Cuomo, once the Governor of New York who resigned amid sexual misconduct allegations, has decided to run for Mayor of The Big Apple.

Firefly Aerospace successfully landed the Blue Ghost on the Moon.  It has begun performing scientific experiments and, maybe, searching for ET.

US stock markets took a bit of a hit this week.  Investors are trying to think ahead of what the administration will do next and how it will effect business.  That's a tough thing to do.

Kurdish militants declared a ceasefire between it's Workers' Party and the government of Turkey.  They have been fighting for over 40 years.  It's hard to keep up with all the people at war in the world.

Saw a note where Citigroup mistakenly credited a customer's account with $81 trillion last April.  It took 90 minutes before they caught it.  I would have bought something really big;  like France for instance.

The Tariffs are on - the Tariffs are off.  It's hard to keep track.  Mostly they're a bargaining tool.  It's surprising, but there are thousands of tariffs in effect all the time.

Mardi Gras evidently went off without a major hitch this year.  Ash Wednesday followed as well as ladies bragging about how many beads they acquired.

XU got a nice win and UC another ugly loss.  Both teams now heading into league tourneys.

I'm tired of Spring Training.  Let's get baseball going. It's all meaningless.

Last week Apple pledged to invest $500 billion in US expansions and this week, TSMC, the huge Taiwanese chipmaker, announced it would invest $100 billion in multiple chip making facilities in the US.  Do they make the ruffle kind?

Speaking of chips, I saw a note where it would be a good idea to save your extra uncooked spaghetti in an empty Pringles can. No extra charge for tips in this column.

Kroger chairman and CEO, Rodney McMullen, resigned when it came to light that his personal conduct did not meet their corporate standards.  Do you think maybe he farted in the elevator?

Pope Francis is still in the hospital.

President Trump spoke to a joint Congressional audience.  He bragged about what he has done and will do while the Democrats held up signs to show disagreement.  Democracy!

We helped the Pakistani Intelligence group to capture Mohammad Sharifullah who was the planner of the bombing at the airport in Kabul, Afghanistan which killed 13 US servicemen during our hasty withdrawal from that country.  He was brought to the US for trial.

A guy named Tom Llamas is going to replace Lester Holt as the NBC Nightly News. anchor.

NETFLIX is getting into the live sports business.  They will air an all-female boxing card in July.

If you were part of the large crowd who followed an early crime podcast (Serial) in 2014, you may be interested to hear that Adnan Syed is free now.  He has served 20 years in prison for his conviction of the killing of a classmate.  The courts reduced his sentence, under Maryland law, to time served.  He is now 43.  He was found guilty in 2000 for the crime he allegedly committed when he was 17.  He never sounded guilty to me.
