RANDOM MUSINGS FROM THE TOP OF THE HILL

5/15/2025

THINGS I'VE LEARNED . . .

Things I've learned and I don't know why.

On May 28, 1986, the city council of Hamilton, Ohio, by a vote of 5-2, officially changed the city's name to Hamilton!.  Really!  How square!  It made national news.

I drove through part of the city recently and there is no sign of the "!".  It's not on any city sign and, I understand, it's not on any city documents or letterhead.

I find that, apparently, the council has never changed the offical name back to the original.  Everyone in the city just ignores it and, evidently, wishes it never happened.

Is that legal?  Could it be that everything the city does now, without the "!", is null and void?  Could a good lawyer make this stick?  As bush league as the stunt was in the first place, it could take a bush league lawyer to take advantage of it.  Wouldn't that be fun?  That would make the national news.

Now you know, too.
