THINGS I'VE LEARNED . . .

Things I've learned and I don't know why.

The Univesity of Akron athletic teams use the nickname Zips.  The Akron Zips.  The university is located in Akron, Ohio and is a research institution concentrating on the STEM subjects.  They have a mascot called Zippy.  It is a female kangaroo of all things.  ZIPS?  How did they get such a name?  

You may be aware of the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company.  It is headquartered in Akron.  Long before they made tires and inflated blimps, they made rubber boots, snow shoes and overshoes.  They were the ones who figured out how to put a zipper on an overshoe.  Ingeneous!  Zips stands for, and orginally was, Zippers.
