Maybe I'm easily amused but I'm able to find humor in most things. Here's an example. I looked up the word hospital to find the etymology of the word. Etymology tells you where the word came from.
Hosptital goes all the way back to the Latin. Of course it has the same roots as hospitality. My friends Merriam and Webster define the word as: "a charitable institution for the needy, aged, infirm or young."
That was the first definition. I've had a few encounters with hospitals in the last few years and "charitable" was not an adjective I would have expected. The second definition is: "an institution where the sick or injured are given medical or surgical care." That's more like it.
Anyway, I found a source for information on hospitals: ahd.com that stands for American Hospital Directory. I limited my search to Ohio and found the following in our neck of the woods. Figures are for the last reporting year; I assume 2024.
Bethesda North has 432 staffed beds and a gross patient revenue of $2,644,337
Good Samaritan has 400 staffed beds and a gross patient revenue of $2,808,145
Kettering Hamilton has 150 staffed beds and a gross patient revenue of $1,003,337
Mercy Health Anderson has 219 staffed beds and a gross patient revenue of $1,261,381
Mercy Health West has 224 staffed beds and a gross patient revenue of $1,520,557
Mercy Health Fairfield has 219 staffed beds and a gross patient revenue of $1,518,772
The Christ Hospital has 500 staffed beds and a gross patient revenue of $3,447,873
The Jewish Hospital has 184 staffed beds and a gross patient revenue of $1,585,406
UC Medical Center has 610 staffed beds and a gross patient reventue of $5,828,973
I'm old and have a lot of old friends supporting these hospitals - mostly new knees, hips and shoulders. Of course they do a lot of great work. As a for instance, I'm told that B-North has 18 operating rooms doing about 45 surgeries a day plus 10 ORs for the same-day-surgery unit doing another 30 a day. That's a hell of a lot of surgeries.
