CINCINNATI SPORTS LAST WEEK

CINCINNATI SPORTS LAST WEEK

Wednesday night, UC entertained Georgetown University at Fifth Third Arena and fought valiantly but came up short 75-65. The outmanned and undersized Cats broke out to a good lead in the first half but fumbled it away just before intermission. They were able to keep the game close from there out but never really threatened the 12th rated Hoyas. Deonta Vaughn had 19 points and five assists to lead Cincinnati.

At the same time, XU was hosting Rhode Island at the Cintas Center and posted a convincing 98-72 victory. Justin Doellman dominated the game with 29 points and five rebounds. Drew Lavender had 22 points and seven assists in one of his better games of the year. The Musketeers now lead the A10 and are in line to get the number 1 seed in the league tournament.

The Fenwick High School girls basketball team is ranked number seven by the Enquirer in divisions II - IV. Hamilton High is ranked number five in division I boys basketball.

State high school basketball tournament play began this week with sectional action. Mariemont met CHCA in the opening round and got put out 62-43. Fenwick boys met Twin Valley South and came up with a stunning 54-45 win. Hamilton High got a first round bye and meets Fairfield next Tuesday.

Saturday afternoon, UC went to Chicago to play DePaul of the Big East and lost 58 to 45. The Bearcats played some good defense but stunk up the place on offense. John Williamson was the only Cat in double figures with 16. Cincinnati has only one win in the Big East and it looks like they may not get another.

Saturday evening, Xavier and Dayton met in a backyard shootout on the Flyers home court. Xavier had held serve in Cincinnati a month ago and the Musketeers prevailed again this time by a score of 75-67. Point guard Drew Lavender came up with another sterling performance scoring 27 points on 7 of 10 shooting from the field and 8 of 8 from the line. Dayton is hard to handle on their home court and this win points to the Muskies being ready for a good run in the NCAA tournament.
