JUNE 6

June 6, 1944. D-Day. The code name was Operation Overlord. On this day, 155,000 US soldiers landed on the beaches of Normandy, France. It was the largest amphibious military assault in history. Dwight David Eisenhower was the Supreme Allied Commander. In all, nearly one million Allied troops crossed the English Channel by the end of June. On August 25th, the operation ended with the liberation of Paris.

In this one Allied operation, the following grim statistics are etched in history.
Canada 5,000 dead and 13,000 wounded or missing
United Kingdom 11,000 dead and 54,000 wounded or missing
USA 29,000 dead and 106,000 wounded or missing

May the world never forget.
