You may think the most knowledgeable sports people are on ESPN, or maybe the guys who write for CBS Sportsline or Fox Sports News. Na! Baby! Na! The real experts are in Las Vegas and I don't mean the bettors. The guys who set the odds are amazing.
They have what is called futures betting. You can bet on who will win the Super Bowl before the season ever starts or at any time during the season. The odds change each week. Each week they get closer to the truth. The first week of the season usually has the biggest changes. Here's what happened this year.
Before the season started, the New England Patriots were 5 to 2 and most likely to get there. Tom Brady went down and they are now 15 to 1. Dallas and Indianapolis were each 6 to 1. The Cowboys are now on top at 7 to 2 and the Colts are 7 to 1 along with San Diego. Last year's champs, the New York Giants, started as 12 to 1 and are now at 11 to 1. The Green Bay Packers were 7 to 1 when it looked like Brett Favre would be their QB and now are 15 to 1. The Pittsburgh Steelers made a big jump from 18 to 1 to an impressive 8 to 1. Pretty interesting stuff.
Oh, yeah. The Cincinnati Bengals. Before the season started they were 38 to 1. After the first week, 60 to 1. Yes, that's how bad they looked last Sunday.
