Here's a word I bet you haven't used except with it's ever present mate. The word is 'merry'. Surely, you've said merry Christmas but have you recently or have you ever used the word merry in any other way? Please admit that it is very rare to hear it.
How did we ever get the connection between these two words? Merry indicates a festive and gay behavior. There's nothing wrong with that but wouldn't 'happy' be a more fitting description for Christmas and 'merry' a more fitting description for New Years? I think it would. The trouble is; Happy Christmas and Merry New Year just sounds wrong to the ear. Maybe I'll try to change that. Be aware and not shocked if I wish you a Happy Christmas this year. And I do hope we all have a merry New Year.
