OBAMACARE

Next week, the Supreme Court is due to hand down its ruling on the constitutionality of the health law commonly known as Obamacare.  They may strike down none, part or all of the law.

The part of the law that caused many states to pose this question to the Court is known as the individual mandate.  That part of the law requires individuals to have health insurance.  In essence, the law forces, under threat of penalty (fine), citizens to buy something that they don't want.  Our government shouldn't be allowed to do that.  The court could decide to throw this provision out or throw the whole law out.

What you haven't heard on the evening news is this.  The whole law doesn't work very well without the individual mandate provision.   It helps justify the costs.  You see, there are thousands of healthy single young people in our country who don't have health insurance because it is expensive and they almost never get sick.  They make the choice not to have it.  This law wants to force them to buy it because they will seldom use it.  Great deal for the insurance companies!  With this provision, the insurance companies will have lower costs per person.  The President was counting on this to offset the additional costs associated with the provision requiring insurance companies to ignore pre-existing conditions.

Very sticky situation!  I think we're going to be talking about it for another two years.
