On this date in 1944, Cincinnati Reds manager Bill McKechnie, with the permission of his high school principal, called on Joe Nuxhall to pitch in a game they were losing 13-0. At 15 years of age, he became the youngest person ever to appear in a Major League baseball game. I doubt this record will ever be broken.
The Reds were short of pitchers in 1944 because many of their players were being called up into the military. Joe was a freshman at Hamilton High and at 6'2" 190 lbs was overpowering junior high kids. He didn't do too well in his first appearance but eventually became a very good pitcher. With the ending of the War the following year, Joe went back to school. He made it back to the Majors in 1952 and had a 14-year career.
