Did you notice the large eyes on that little rabbit I photographed in my garden the other day? Of course, rabbits are crepuscular. Say what? Crepuscular!
You usually only see rabbits at dusk or dawn. Because of their eyes, they can't take bright light. Deer and many woodland animals have the same type of vision - they are also crepuscular. Those large eyes which do not narrow very well like human eyes are best in low-light situations. This is why deer freeze when your car lights shine in their eyes. It blinds them momentarily - like when you look right into a photo-flash. Lightning bugs are crepuscular, too.
Be especially watchful for deer when driving in the early morning or evening AND when it is foggy.
