On this date in 1957, the television show American Bandstand debuted on national TV. It had been a local show in Philadelphia. Dick Clark was the host from 1956 through it's final season in 1989. It was a live, all-music dance program that catered to young people. A novel idea at the time. Not only did it spawn Soul Train, MTV and the like, but teenagers and preteens got to know all the dancers which made it the equivalent of current reality shows. It was an original and a trendsetter - two good things to be.
