When I was a kid, the casual 'warm weather shoes' worn now by most women, called sandals or flip-flops, were worn only in the shower at school or the gym. They were meant to prevent athletes foot.
When I was in Southeast Asia, courtesy of the US Army, those were the standard, every-day footwear for the locals of all ages. I had never seen them worn in public until then. We called them "Vietnamese safety shoes." Who knew they were ahead of the style curve?
