WHEN I WAS A KID

When I was a kid, decaffeinated coffee was not unheard of but it was very limited.  There was only one type on the market, that I recall, and it was Instant Sanka.  The name Sanka was synonymous with decaffeinated coffee.  There was no competition.

At that time, the thought that you would drink coffee and not have caffeine defeated the whole purpose for most people. Through the years, of course, decaffeinated coffee and teas have become more popular.

My dad was a black-coffee-with-two-teaspoons-of-sugar guy.  My mom drank coffee with heavy milk and sugar.  I doubt they really liked the taste of coffee.

I tried all that but became a black-with-nothing-in-it drinker when I reached the appropriate age.  I'm not sure what age that was but I was certainly in my teen years (it was after milk and before beer).  I switched to decaffeinated coffee after I got out of the Army.   The caffeine never bothered me or my sleep - it just didn't seem good for you.  I could hardly tell the difference between regular and decaffeinated.  Many people claim that one or the other gives them a headache.

To all this I add that I haven't had a drink of coffee since 1995 ... and it doesn't bother me a bit.
