On this date in 1997, Diana Princes of Wales, was killed in an auto accident at the age of 36. Her driver ran into an abutment in a tunnel on a Paris highway. Her companion, Dodi Fayed and the driver also died.
Diana had become the most recognized member of the Royal Family of Britain and maybe the most recognized person in the world. She had dedicated her adult life to the aid of so many worthy causes that it is difficult to name them all. Her charity work took her to leprosy colonies, cancer wards, landmine remediation programs, HIV/AIDS hospitals, homeless centers, mental/drug abuse clinics, etc.
Before her death, she had divorced Charles, Prince of Wales, who had carried on a semi-open affair with his current wife, Camilla. With Charles, she produced Princes William and Henry. Prince William is second in line to the throne behind his father.
Her death and subsequent funeral captivated international news for weeks. At the time, it seemed as if the world cried.
