When I was a kid, most of the world shut down on Sundays. No department stores were open. No hardware stores were open. No bars were open. No non-essential business was open.
This was done because Sunday was the Lord's day. That was back when this was a Christian country.
These businesses weren't always closed by choice, either. There were laws, called Blue Laws, which forbid many activities on Sunday. I think these laws were changed in this area in the late 1950's or early 1960's. In some parts of the country they still exist.
