REVOLUTION

The Revolutionary War was really our first civil war.  Only about 1/3 of people living in this country were firmly for the revolution.  Of the others, half were firmly loyal to England and all the rest didn't know what they wanted; many changed their minds as the war went on.

George Washington became famous during that war.  He was the Commander-in-Chief before he became President.   His outstanding generals included one Benedict Arnold.

Yes, Benedict Arnold, forever known as the first American traitor, was an American General in the Revolutionary War.  He was second in command at the Battle of Saratoga.  When things were dragging, he ignored his superior, General Gates, and personally led a successful attack on the British lines.  This battle, September thru October 1777,  is considered the turning point of the war.  During the battle, Arnold's horse was shot and it fell on him fracturing his leg and permanently disabling him.
