On this date in 1966, fifty years ago, the Supreme Court ruled on the case known as Miranda v Arizona. The landmark decision in favor of Miranda established that a defendant at trial must have been warned by authorities of an individual's legal rights before statements made by that individual are admissible in court. Those legal rights are: 1) the right to an attorney 2) the right to avoid self-incrimination. Further, the court ruled that it must be demonstrated that the defendant understood these rights and waived them if he made a statement.
Each court jurisdiction has it's own version of what actually must be said. I haven't and I hope I never will hear this warning except on TV or in the movies.
