On this date in 1974, President Richard M. Nixon held a televised press conference and announced that he would resign from office the next day at noon.  This was the result of the Watergate break-in and the exposing of his private oval office tape recordings concerning the matter.

On this date in 1990, Iraq entered and occupied it's oil-rich neighbor, Kuwait.  President Saddam Hussein's country annexed the small state and claimed it as it's own.  Shortly afterward, President George H.W. Bush pulled the trigger and the first Gulf War began.
