LIGHTHOUSES

One of my favorite subjects for painting is lighthouses.  I've never been in one but they really fascinate me.

At one time, the U.S. had over 1000 lighthouses on it's shores.  Today, there are still over 600.  Modern technology has eliminated the need in most cases but they still serve their purpose.  Besides that, they are romantic and beautiful.

Lighthouses were originally lit with fire.  They were like huge lanterns.  Mirrors and reflective glass increased the light output.  Because of the smoke from the fire, the lighthouse operator had to keep adding fuel and constantly cleaning the glass.  Today, of course, electric lighting is available and many lighthouses operate without an operator.  Actually, you can purchase a lighthouse if you are so inclined.

Question of the day:  Which state in the U.S. has the most lighthouses?   Let your mind wonder for a moment.  Go up and down the coastline.  Have you made your guess?  You're wrong.  It's Michigan.
