RANDOM MUSINGS FROM THE TOP OF THE HILL

POTPOURRI

Why do you get in a car but get on a bus?  The next time you get on an airplane hold tight and don't fall off.

The source of the mighty Mississippi River is Lake Itasca in northern Minnesota.  That little lake sits 1,475' above sea level.  Of course, the river ends at sea level in the Gulf of Mexico.

In a yellow jacket colony, only the inseminated queen lives through the Winter.  It's interesting that there are three types of yellow jackets:  workers, queens and drones.  The workers and queens are all female.  The drones are all male.  The queen lays eggs all Spring and Summer before she dies in the Fall.  The males protect the hive and some inseminate new queens.  Once they mate, the males die. Inseminated queens go off to find a safe place to over-winter and start the whole process again.

The Bengals are solid but . . . the early schedule is tough and they will face it without Vontaz Burfict, Cedric Peerman and, probably, Tyler Eifert.   Right tackle Cedric Ogbuehi is now a key player and may also be hurt.  Center Russell Bodine is pinpointed as a possible weakness in the offensive line by outside sources.  The most impressive player to me so far is Tyler Boyd, a rookie wide receiver.  Shawn Williams may have secured the defensive safety spot.  One curious development is that it appears Dre Kirkpatrick's starting job may be in jeopardy.  The most scary dimension is place kicker Mike Nugent.  His consistency was never great but seems worse this pre-season.
