LANGUAGE

French was the official language of England for about 600 years!   WHAT!!?!!

William the Conqueror led the Norman Invasion of England during the 11th century.  Normans were from Normandy - part of France.  The Norman aristocrats took over English society and spoke their form of the French language.  English commoners stuck with Old English.   Lots of French words crept into English in the following centuries.  Eventually, the language of the commoners and the elites melded together.  Viola - modern English.
