MARCH 6

On this date in 1836, the Alamo fell.  It was the last day of a battle that raged for 13 days. The Mexican army overran the Alamo and killed all present including Davey Crockett, Jim Bowie, William Travis and about 180 others.

The Alamo was a small garrison located in San Antonio.  The Mexican forces had overwhelming numbers.  The Battle of the Alamo was part of the Texas Revolution in which the Texians were wanting to become independent from Mexican rule.

Six weeks later, a Texian force led by Sam Houston, defeated the Mexican Army led by Santa Anna in the Battle of San Jacinto.  The Texians declared their independence and became The Republic of Texas.

In 1845, Texas became a state of the United States.  "Don't Mess with Texas!"
