RANDOM MUSINGS FROM THE TOP OF THE HILL

The pole-sitter qualified at 232+ mph.  Amazing!

This refers to the Indianapolis 500 race which will take place this Sunday, weather permitting.  The "pole-sitter" is the fastest qualifier - that car starts in the front row next to the pole which is the start/finish line.  There are eleven rows of three cars each that are scheduled to start the race.  The fastest qualifiers get to start in the front.  The slowest qualifier this year only averaged 221+ mph in his three qualifying laps last week.

The race was first run in 1911.  No qualifying was used - it was first come first served.  The second year, 1912, the top qualifier drove a lap at the extreme speed of 80+ mph.  In 1919, they broke the 100 mph rate for the first time.  It wasn't until 1977 that a car broke the 200 mph barrier in qualifying.

This is the 101st year for the race.  The pole sitter has won only 20 of the first 100 races.

It's fun.  I love it.
