RANDOM MUSINGS FROM THE TOP OF THE HILL

JUNE 26

"Ich bin ein Berliner."  These are the words President John F. Kennedy used in his speech given in West Berlin on this date in 1963.  They translate to "I am a Berliner."  The Soviet Union had just erected the Berlin Wall between East and West Berlin.  The world was outraged.  Kennedy went there and was speaking before a crowd of 450,000 Germans from the steps of their city hall.  He proclaimed our solidarity with the German people.

The "Wall" stood until the Soviet Union began to crumble in 1989.   It was taken down between 1990 and 1992.   This speech was perhaps Kennedy's most memorable - on this date in 1963.
