Last Friday I wrote about the current NCAA Basketball scandal instigated by the FBI which has taken down the University of Louisville program and threatens many more. Now, I'm here to tell you about or remind you of an even more serious scandal in the same vein of corruption. It is at the University of North Carolina. It includes fraud and academic dishonesty perpetrated by the athletic department and overlooked by those in charge.
UNC in Chapel Hill first 'discovered problems' related to the football program in 2010. Later, these same 'problems' were found to also relate to the basketball program which has been traditionally one of the top winning schools in the country and includes national titles.
It seems that this university includes a College of African and Afro-American Studies. This school, it comes to light, offered some 200 classes popular with UNC athletes, that never actually had classes - they didn't meet. "Teachers" used some other criteria for grades. Further investigation showed that athletes had "tutors" who would take test and complete papers for them in other classes.
The governor of North Carolina undertook an investigation of the school's practices and found them fraudulent and academically dishonest. An investigation by a U.S. Department of Justice official found the school fraudulent and academically dishonest. This school has been under NCAA "investigation" for many years and still no penalty. The dark underbelly of intercollegiate athletics is coming to light - very slowly.
