RANDOM MUSINGS FROM THE TOP OF THE HILL

1/29/2018

JANUARY 29

On this date in 1936, the first five inductees into the Major League Baseball Hall of Fame were announced.  They were Ty Cobb (CF), Walter Johnson (P), Christy Mathewson (P), Babe Ruth (RF) and Honus Wagner (SS).  Through this date, 323 people have been elected to the Hall, 224 of which were players in the Major League.  The player amassing the most hits in the history of the game is not one of those so elected.

On this date in 1963, the first inductees into the National Football League Hall of Fame were announced.  The players were Sammy Baugh (QB,DB,P), Dutch Clark (QB), Harold "Red" Grange (RB), George Halas (E, DE), Mel Hein (C), Pete Henry (T,P,K), Cal Hubbard (T,DT), Don Hutson (E,S,K), Earl "Curly" Lambeau (RB), John "Blood" McNally (RB), Bronko Nagurski (FB,LB), Ernie Nevers (FB), and Jim Thorpe (RB).  Quite a few executives, coaches, team and league founders were also part of the initial induction.  The first person associated with the Cincinnati Bengals was inducted in 1967 - that, of course, was team founder and head coach Paul Brown.  The first player was Charlie Joiner, a wide receiver who played part of his career here from 1972-1975.  The only other Bengals inductee is the man who makes the Furniture Fair ads; Anthony Munoz - maybe the greatest tackle in the history of the league.  Through this date, 301 people have been elected to the Hall.

So, same date in 1936 and 1963 - is that a coincidence?
