WEEKEND LITURGY

1 SAM 3:3B-10, 19     PSALM 40     1 COR 6:13C-15A, 17-20     JOHN 1:35-42

This weekend in the Gospel we hear John's interpretation of how Jesus gained his first apostles.  Interesting but, for me, not the big deal this weekend.  The reading from the first book of Samuel is the one that strikes me.

You see, Samuel was a young man at the time and God called to him as he slept in the temple. He did not recognize that it was God.  He thought it was Eli, the Jewish high priest.  No dice.  It happened a second time and same result.  Then Eli told him that it must be God.  The third time, Samuel knew that it was God talking to him.

Here is the first lesson:  Just like Samuel, we may need help to recognize God's call if we are not used to talking to him.  Accept the help.

The second lesson goes along with the first.  When I was young, I learned that prayer was "talking to God."  That is a child's definition.  Now I know that prayer is talking with God.  Don't just talk - listen!   Get to a quiet place.  Throw off the distractions of the world.  Share !  Listen!
