NÜRBURG

Nürburg is a city in Germany and it is the home of the Nürburgring - a race track on the Grand Prix circuit.  This town has a great idea.

Like most sporting venues, this race track was only used a few days a year.  It's difficult to justify paying for a big facility under these circumstances.  So what did they do?  Of course, they let the 'crazies' in on most unused days.  They actually set up a toll booth in the pit area and welcomed all cars, trucks, buses, motorcycles - you name it - they turned it into a twenty-five mile highway with, for the most part, no speed limit.  You can time your laps or just try to beat your friend. It's crazy.  You can go to YouTube and see videos of what happens.  The maniacs are flying all over the place.

Remember, a Grand Prix course has twists and turns and even ups and downs.  To top it off, there is 1,000' of elevation change in the complete course.  It is a challenge at high speed for the average car and average driver.  The most redeeming factor for the course is that there is no oncoming traffic.

There are a few things you will have to consider.  You wreck - you pay for the tow and clean-up.   You wreck into their barriers - you pay to fix them. You wreck - your insurance man may laugh at you.

But still, they line up to take a spin.  Evidently, Nürburg is getting along quite well with the set-up.  That brings me to our stadiums, arenas and race tracks in this country.  We need to be a little more inventive and accommodating to the public - the crazy public - the crazy public with money to blow.
I'm think there are opportunities.  I'll chip in to play a football game at Paul Brown Stadium next Thanksgiving - how about you?

(Were you impressed with my umlauts?  Old dog learned a new trick.)
